Mission Savannah

16 students of the 9th grade of the Wilhelm-Kaisen-Oberschule have a mission for which they need your help. The students would like to do a student exchange with Sol C. Johnson High School in Savannah, Georgia, USA.

The student exchange will take place from September 8 to 19, 2023.

What is are the aims of the project?

– Language development and awareness
– Getting to know a new country and culture
– Making friends
– Acquiring life and cultural experience

What are the main goals and the target group?

The students should be given the opportunity to actively gain life experience that they would otherwise only be able to experience through the media. Career prospects are also to develop from this. Various company visits will contribute to the latter.

What must the students do themselves?

They are raising money through their own campaign and offering homemade “thank you gifts,” which will include a future club event, namely a trip report at a club night. There will be a benefit event with the students before departure, if applicable.

At any time, a donation can be made to the club account with the keyword “Mission Savannah”.

In addition, it is already planned that in the spring of 2024 the students of the “Sol C. Johnson High School” want to come for a return visit. They will also be the subject of their own club event.

On Tuesday, July 4, 2023 in great barbecue weather, the board of CSDAC e.V. invited its members, guests and friends to the annual traditional “4th of July” barbecue, but this time in a new venue. Instead of the Findorff marketplace with “self-grilling” by the board, this time we celebrated the holiday in the Waldbühne–in the middle of the city park, the green heart of the city.

Our president Ulf-Brün Drechsel welcomed a festive society according to American custom with the opening of the buffet and provided some background to the Waldbühne–a very unique location in Bremen that was built in 1890 as a wooden pavilion.

Despite it being a weekday, over sixty members, guests and friends of the club took part in celebrating this special American holiday. Very attentively, the Waldbühne service team served us a traditional barbecue buffet, with beef and vegan patties from the grill and delicious desserts. Perhaps “un-American”, but “Bremisch” with freshly tapped Haake- Beck and Kräusen as well as Rote Grütze with vanilla sauce could not be missing.

Once again, we were able to welcome many students from our partner university Dickinson College and from the University of Colorado and the University of Bremen as well as the non-profit Constructor University together with lecturers and (guest) professors to the good-spirited event. At the many small tables in the uniquely decorated Waldbühne, an open, relaxed communicative exchange quickly came about, mixed in German and/or English – as befits such an event. With nice conversations and a cheerful mood, the time flew by and around 10:00 p.m. the last guests chatting on the outdoor beer garden tables left the location.

We look forward to seeing you at the next 4th of July 2024 Celebration!

In the well-established German-American Business Breakfast series, our club had the pleasure of inviting Melf Lorenzen to the podium. Melf Lorenzen is head of the American business of Deutsche Windtechnik AG, headquartered in Bremen. His presentation under the title “The hour of renewable energies in the USA market introduction success of Deutsche Windtechnik” drew much interest from invitees.

Under President Biden, renewable energies are currently experiencing a boom in the United States that clearly dwarfs the current pace of expansion in Germany. In this context, the USA is benefiting above all from the large area potential in wind-rich, virtually population-free regions. Even if statements by Republicans at the federal level doubt climate change and advocate the use of fossil fuels: Actions at the state level, like in Republican-governed Texas, show that state governments are aware and exploiting the great potential of renewables on both sides of the aisle.

Regardless of whether the question was over skilled labor requirements, assessments of the political situation or technical specifications, Melf Lorenzen knew how to competently satisfy the curiosity of his audience. Not only the American breakfast thus guaranteed a successful start to the day!

Bremen and cotton – A global and versatile raw material in the Hanseatic city.

This was the title of the invitation and the “Carl Schurz Lecture” on June 1 at the Cotton Exchange.

Mrs. Stephanie Silber, acting president of the Exchange, presented our members interesting facts to the house, the history of the Bremen cotton trade and early contacts of the Exchange with the Carl Schurz Society.

We Bremer must be proud of the fact that Bremen is the world’s headquarters for fiber science and certification of testing methods. The “Cotton Exchange” association is the founder of the “German Fiber Institute”, which operates the world’s leading laboratory in the building.

A tool developed here decades ago and reissued annually since then is the sample box, on the basis of which the current standards of cotton quality are still determined worldwide. These boxes are manufactured and equipped here and sent to retailers and organizations worldwide.

It was amazing hearing of the association’s wide-reaching work in the indurstry, which ranged from tasks and challenges in fashion and the environmental and social aspects from cultivation to processing.

The natural product, whose largest single producer is the USA, employs 140 million people in the tropical belt in cultivation alone.

We are proud that with Mrs. Silber the series of lecturers in this traditional format was continued in a worthy manner.

Finally, we were able to take a look at the book published especially for the 150th anniversary of the Cotton Exchange. Many present decided to purchase one to take home. Thus this Bremensie finds entrance into the book shelves of our members.
